James 4
1 From whence come wars and fightings among you
A ⟨among you, and from whence fightings⟩; ℵB ⟨and from whence fightings among you⟩
? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?1 Unde bella et lites in vobis? nonne hinc: ex concupiscentiis vestris, quæ militant in membris vestris?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet
BA omit; ℵ ⟨and⟩
ye have not, because ye ask not.2 concupiscitis, et non habetis: occiditis, et zelatis: et non potestis adipisci: litigatis, et belligeratis, et non habetis, propter quod non postulatis.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
ℵBA ⟨lusts,⟩
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know
ℵBA ⟨Ye adulteresses. Know⟩
ye not that the friendship of theℵ ⟨this⟩
world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of Godℵ ⟨if therefore any one will be a friend of the world, there is enmity with God⟩
.4 Adulteri, nescitis quia amicitia hujus mundi inimica est Dei? quicumque ergo voluerit amicus esse sæculi hujus, inimicus Dei constituitur.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
5 An putatis quia inaniter Scriptura dicat: Ad invidiam concupiscit spiritus qui habitat in vobis?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist
ℵBA ⟨But resist⟩
the devil, and he will flee from you.7 Subditi ergo estote Deo, resistite autem diabolo, et fugiet a vobis.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
8 Appropinquate Deo, et appropinquabit vobis. Emundate manus, peccatores: et purificate corda, duplices animo.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and
ℵA omit
weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.9 Miseri estote, et lugete, et plorate: risus vester in luctum convertatur, et gaudium in mœrorem.
10 Humble
ℵ ⟨Therefore humble⟩
yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.10 Humiliamini in conspectu Domini, et exaltabit vos.
11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren
A ⟨my brethren⟩
. He that speaketh evil of his brother, andℵBA ⟨or⟩
judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.11 Nolite detrahere alterutrum fratres.
12 There is one lawgiver
ℵBA ⟨lawgiver and judge⟩
, who is able to save and to destroy: whoℵBA ⟨but who⟩
art thou that judgest anotherℵBA ⟨thy neighbour⟩
13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or

a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:13 ¶ Tu autem quis es, qui judicas proximum?
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For
ℵB omit
what is your life? It is even a vapourℵ ⟨life⟩; A ⟨life? Ye are a vapour⟩; B ⟨life? For ye are a vapour⟩
, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.14 qui ignoratis quid erit in crastino.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
16 Nunc autem exsultatis in superbiis vestris. Omnis exsultatio talis, maligna est.
17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
