Mark 1
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God
ℵ* omit
;1 Initium Evangelii Jesu Christi, Filii Dei.
2 As it is written in the prophets
ℵB ⟨Esaias the prophet⟩
, Behold, I sendℵ ⟨will send⟩
my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before theeℵB omit
.2 Sicut scriptum est in Isaia propheta: Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam,
qui præparabit viam tuam ante te.
qui præparabit viam tuam ante te.
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
3 Vox clamantis in deserto:
Parate viam Domini, rectas facite semitas ejus.
Parate viam Domini, rectas facite semitas ejus.
4 John
ℵ* ⟨And John⟩
did baptize in the wildernessℵB ⟨the Baptist was in the wilderness⟩
, and preachB ⟨preaching⟩
the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.4 ¶ Fuit Joannes in deserto baptizans, et prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum.
5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized
ℵ* ⟨they of Jerusalem were all baptized⟩
of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.5 Et egrediebatur ad eum omnis Judææ regio, et Jerosolymitæ universi, et baptizabantur ab illo in Jordanis flumine, confitentes peccata sua.
6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
6 Et erat Joannes vestitus pilis cameli, et zona pellicea circa lumbos ejus, et locustas et mel silvestre edebat.
7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
7 Et prædicabat dicens: Venit fortior me post me, cujus non sum dignus procumbens solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus.
8 I indeed
ℵB omit
have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize youℵ* omit
with the Holy Ghost.8 Ego baptizavi vos aqua, ille vero baptizabit vos Spiritu Sancto.
9 And
B omit
it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in JordanℵB ⟨in Jordan of John⟩
.9 ¶ Et factum est: in diebus illis venit Jesus a Nazareth Galilææ: et baptizatus est a Joanne in Jordane.
10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending
ℵ ⟨descending and remaining⟩
upon him:10 Et statim ascendens de aqua, vidit cælos apertos, et Spiritum tamquam columbam descendentem, et manentem in ipso.
11 And there came
ℵ* omit
a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whomℵB ⟨thee⟩
I am well pleased.11 Et vox facta est de cælis: Tu es Filius meus dilectus, in te complacui.
12 And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
12 ¶ Et statim Spiritus expulit eum in desertum.
13 And he was there
ℵBA omit
in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and theA omit
angels ministered unto him.13 Et erat in deserto quadraginta diebus, et quadraginta noctibus: et tentabatur a Satana: eratque cum bestiis, et angeli ministrabant illi.
14 Now
B ⟨And⟩
after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom ofℵB omit
God,14 ¶ Postquam autem traditus est Joannes, venit Jesus in Galilæam, prædicans Evangelium regni Dei,
15 And saying,
ℵ* omit; ℵ2A ⟨Saying,⟩
The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.15 et dicens: Quoniam impletum est tempus, et appropinquavit regnum Dei: pœnitemini, et credite Evangelio.
16 Now as he walked
ℵB ⟨And as he passed along⟩
by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brotherℵB ⟨the brother of Simon⟩
casting a netℵB ⟨nets here and there⟩; A ⟨a net here and there⟩
into the sea: for they were fishers.16 Et præteriens secus mare Galilææ, vidit Simonem, et Andream fratrem ejus, mittentes retia in mare (erant enim piscatores),
17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
17 et dixit eis Jesus: Venite post me, et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum.
18 And straightway they forsook their
ℵB ⟨the⟩
nets, and followed him.18 Et protinus relictis retibus, secuti sunt eum.
19 And when he had gone a little
ℵ* omit
farther thenceB omit
, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.19 Et progressus inde pusillum, vidit Jacobum Zebedæi, et Joannem fratrem ejus, et ipsos componentes retia in navi:
20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.
20 et statim vocavit illos. Et relicto patre suo Zebedæo in navi cum mercenariis, secuti sunt eum.
21 And they went into Capernaum
ℵB ⟨Capharnaum⟩
; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taughtℵ ⟨he taught in the synagogue⟩
.21 ¶ Et ingrediuntur Capharnaum: et statim sabbatis ingressus in synagogam, docebat eos.
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
22 Et stupebant super doctrina ejus: erat enim docens eos quasi potestatem habens, et non sicut scribæ.
23 And
ℵB ⟨And straightway⟩
there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,23 Et erat in synagoga eorum homo in spiritu immundo: et exclamavit,
24 Saying, Let us alone;
ℵ*B omit
what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? Iℵ ⟨we⟩
know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.24 dicens: Quid nobis et tibi, Jesu Nazarene? venisti perdere nos? scio qui sis, Sanctus Dei.
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying,
ℵ*A* omit
Hold thy peace, and come out of him.25 Et comminatus est ei Jesus, dicens: Obmutesce, et exi de homine.
26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
26 Et discerpens eum spiritus immundus, et exclamans voce magna, exiit ab eo.
27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves
ℵ omit
, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spiritsℵB ⟨What is this? A new doctrine with authority! He commandeth even the unclean spirits⟩
, and they do obey him.27 Et mirati sunt omnes, ita ut conquirerent inter se dicentes: Quidnam est hoc? quænam doctrina hæc nova? quia in potestate etiam spiritibus immundis imperat, et obediunt ei.
28 And immediately
ℵ* omit
his fame spread abroadℵ2B ⟨abroad every where⟩
throughout all the region round about Galileeℵ* ⟨Judæa⟩
.28 Et processit rumor ejus statim in omnem regionem Galilææ.
29 And forthwith, when they were
B ⟨he was⟩
come out of the synagogue, theyB ⟨he⟩
entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.29 ¶ Et protinus egredientes de synagoga, venerunt in domum Simonis et Andreæ, cum Jacobo et Joanne.
30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.
30 Decumbebat autem socrus Simonis febricitans: et statim dicunt ei de illa.
31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately
ℵB omit
the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.31 Et accedens elevavit eam, apprehensa manu ejus: et continuo dimisit eam febris, et ministrabat eis.
32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.
32 ¶ Vespere autem facto cum occidisset sol, afferebant ad eum omnes male habentes, et dæmonia habentes:
33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.
33 et erat omnis civitas congregata ad januam.
34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases
ℵ* omit
, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew himℵ2B ⟨that he was Christ⟩
.34 Et curavit multos, qui vexabantur variis languoribus, et dæmonia multa ejiciebat, et non sinebat ea loqui, quoniam sciebant eum.
35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed

into a solitary place, and there prayed.35 ¶ Et diluculo valde surgens, egressus abiit in desertum locum, ibique orabat.
36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.
36 Et prosecutus est eum Simon, et qui cum illo erant.
37 And when they had
ℵB ⟨they⟩
found him, they saidℵB ⟨and say⟩
unto him, All men seek for thee.37 Et cum invenissent eum, dixerunt ei: Quia omnes quærunt te.
38 And he said unto them, Let us go into
ℵB ⟨elsewhere into⟩
the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.38 Et ait illis: Eamus in proximos vicos, et civitates, ut et ibi prædicem: ad hoc enim veni.
39 And he preached
ℵ* ⟨came to preach⟩; ℵ2B ⟨came preaching⟩
in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.39 Et erat prædicans in synagogis eorum, et in omni Galilæa, et dæmonia ejiciens.
40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and

saying unto him, If thou wiltB ⟨Lord, if thou wilt⟩
, thou canst make me clean.40 ¶ Et venit ad eum leprosus deprecans eum: et genu flexo dixit ei: Si vis, potes me mundare.
41 And Jesus
ℵB ⟨he⟩
, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto himℵ omit
, I will; be thou clean.41 Jesus autem misertus ejus, extendit manum suam: et tangens eum, ait illi: Volo: mundare.
42 And as soon as he had spoken,
ℵB omit
immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.42 Et cum dixisset, statim discessit ab eo lepra, et mundatus est.
43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
43 Et comminatus est ei, statimque ejecit illum,
44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any
ℵA ⟨to no⟩
man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.44 et dicit ei: Vide nemini dixeris: sed vade, ostende te principi sacerdotum, et offer pro emundatione tua, quæ præcepit Moyses in testimonium illis.
45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
45 At ille egressus cœpit prædicare, et diffamare sermonem, ita ut jam non posset manifeste introire in civitatem, sed foris in desertis locis esset, et conveniebant ad eum undique.
