Psalm 49
1 Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
48:1 In finem, filiis Core. Psalmus.
2 ¶ Audite hæc, omnes gentes;
auribus percipite, omnes qui habitatis orbem:
auribus percipite, omnes qui habitatis orbem:
2 Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
3 quique terrigenæ et filii hominum,
simul in unum dives et pauper.
simul in unum dives et pauper.
3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
4 Os meum loquetur sapientiam,
et meditatio cordis mei prudentiam.
et meditatio cordis mei prudentiam.
4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
5 Inclinabo in parabolam aurem meam;
aperiam in psalterio propositionem meam.
aperiam in psalterio propositionem meam.
5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
6 Cur timebo in die mala?
iniquitas calcanei mei circumdabit me.
iniquitas calcanei mei circumdabit me.
6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
7 Qui confidunt in virtute sua,
et in multitudine divitiarum suarum, gloriantur.
et in multitudine divitiarum suarum, gloriantur.
7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
8 Frater non redimit, redimet homo:
non dabit Deo placationem suam,
non dabit Deo placationem suam,
8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
9 et pretium redemptionis animæ suæ.
Et laborabit in æternum;
Et laborabit in æternum;
9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
10 et vivet adhuc in finem.
10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
11 Non videbit interitum,
cum viderit sapientes morientes:
simul insipiens et stultus peribunt.
Et relinquent alienis divitias suas,
cum viderit sapientes morientes:
simul insipiens et stultus peribunt.
Et relinquent alienis divitias suas,
11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
12 et sepulchra eorum domus illorum in æternum;
tabernacula eorum in progenie et progenie:
vocaverunt nomina sua in terris suis.
tabernacula eorum in progenie et progenie:
vocaverunt nomina sua in terris suis.
12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
13 Et homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit.
Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus,
et similis factus est illis.
Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus,
et similis factus est illis.
13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
14 Hæc via illorum scandalum ipsis;
et postea in ore suo complacebunt.
et postea in ore suo complacebunt.
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
15 Sicut oves in inferno positi sunt:
mors depascet eos.
Et dominabuntur eorum justi in matutino;
et auxilium eorum veterascet in inferno a gloria eorum.
mors depascet eos.
Et dominabuntur eorum justi in matutino;
et auxilium eorum veterascet in inferno a gloria eorum.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
16 Verumtamen Deus redimet animam meam de manu inferi,
cum acceperit me.
cum acceperit me.
16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
17 Ne timueris cum dives factus fuerit homo,
et cum multiplicata fuerit gloria domus ejus:
et cum multiplicata fuerit gloria domus ejus:
17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
18 quoniam, cum interierit, non sumet omnia,
neque descendet cum eo gloria ejus.
neque descendet cum eo gloria ejus.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
19 Quia anima ejus in vita ipsius benedicetur;
confitebitur tibi cum benefeceris ei.
confitebitur tibi cum benefeceris ei.
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
20 Introibit usque in progenies patrum suorum;
et usque in æternum non videbit lumen.
et usque in æternum non videbit lumen.
20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
21 Homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit.
Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus,
et similis factus est illis.
Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus,
et similis factus est illis.
